Leden NMo rondleiding in Kasteel de Haar Zuilens

About NMo

NMo is an association of professional monument management organizations that brings together people and knowledge within the heritage sector.

The association represents the interests of Professional Organizations for Monument Preservation (POM) and equivalent organizations, striving for an optimal way to preserve monuments for future generations.

Working together for a good future for monuments

Mission
Monuments are indispensable carriers of our history and identity. However, they are under pressure due to vacancy, restoration needs, and the effects of climate change. We believe in collaboration and knowledge sharing among monument management organizations to better preserve our heritage for future generations.

Our Vision
NMo works towards a better future for monuments in the Netherlands. We aim for good destinations and stewardship by sharing knowledge and insights and by developing effective solutions together with our members.

Objectives
NMo has outlined its strategy for the coming years in an updated policy plan. This plan serves as the foundation for the activities of the association from 2025 to 2027.

The main priorities are:

  • Promotion of good monument management through knowledge exchange.
  • Strengthening the collaboration between monument management organizations.
  • Advocacy for the Professional Organizations for Monument Management (POM) and affiliated organizations.
  • Oversight of acquired monuments from the Monumentenbezit Foundation.
  • Bringing together supply and demand for monumental real estate to reduce vacancy.
  • Strengthening the connection between the monument care sector and the public, societal organizations, and businesses.

Establishment
The National Monument Organization (NMo) was established in 2014 after the government decided to divest 29 national monuments, later supplemented with 3 additional monuments.

NMo received a maintenance subsidy and was tasked with:

  • Promoting good monument management outside existing organizations.
  • Strengthening collaboration among monument management organizations.
  • Improving the connection between monument care, the public, social organizations, and businesses.
  • Bringing together the supply and demand for monumental real estate.

The transferred national monuments are currently efficiently managed by the Monumentenbezit Foundation, and the assets have been placed under the Stichting NMo Instandhoudingsfonds since 2023.
